Should You Watch the Scrubs Reboot?

Scrubs 2026 official poster

There is a version of this reboot that goes horribly wrong. You have seen it before. The cast reunites, the jokes land flat, the original magic has curdled into something awkward and corporate.

When ABC announced it was bringing back Scrubs after 16 years, a lot of people assumed that is exactly what they were getting. They were wrong.

The show picks up after a long gap. J.D. (Zach Braff) and Turk (Donald Faison) are back at Sacred Heart, but time has done what time does. Turk is now Chief of Surgery. J.D. is returning after years away. The interns they now mentor are a new generation, and the show uses that shift cleverly. The people who used to be the young and terrified ones are now the ones doing the teaching.

Elliot (Sarah Chalke) is back as a series regular. Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) and Carla (Judy Reyes) return in recurring roles. Series creator Bill Lawrence is running the room again alongside Braff and Faison, who are also executive producers. That matters more than almost any other fact about this show.

"It was like it was never even off the air." The most common reaction from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. It says everything.

The Numbers Tell You Something

The premiere landed 91% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 95% Audience Score. The IMDb rating sits at 8.3 from over 9,500 ratings. These are not the numbers of a nostalgia cash grab. These are the numbers of a show that actually works.

For context, the original Scrubs holds an 8.4 on IMDb across its entire run. The reboot is one tenth of a point behind a show that produced some of television's most beloved episodes. That is not embarrassing. That is genuinely impressive.

Why Most Reboots Fail and Why This One Doesn't

The post-mortem on failed reboots is almost always the same. The creative team chases the ghost of the original instead of building something that earns the same emotional weight through new material. Will and Grace came back and felt like a copy of itself. Sex and the City returned as And Just Like That and spent two seasons apologizing for existing. The Fresh Prince reboot was a drama about a show that was a comedy.

Scrubs avoids this because it has a structural advantage: time. J.D. and Turk being older, teaching new doctors, dealing with what they have become rather than who they were, gives the writers real dramatic territory to work with. IndieWire called it "confidently funny in the Ted Lasso era of prestige comedy." That is the exact lane the show needed to find.

"Rapid-fire humor, nostalgic callbacks, and the reminder that these characters genuinely matter." The reboot breaks the Scrubs series record with a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes audience score.

What Audiences Are Actually Saying

Reddit went in skeptical and came out surprised. The r/Scrubs community consensus is that the first two episodes feel like the show picked up a conversation it left mid-sentence. The chemistry between Braff and Faison is reportedly unchanged, which is the load-bearing wall the entire show rests on. They have been best friends in real life since the show began. It shows.

Bill Lawrence told Deadline after the premiere: "We're all crossing our fingers that they let us do a season 2." The show has high ratings for ABC standards and the early numbers give it a real shot.

Should You Watch It?

If you loved the original, yes. The setup is built for returning fans, but it is not alienating to newcomers who just want a smart, warm, actually funny medical comedy. The show has the same specific texture it always had: absurdist fantasy sequences, real emotional gut-punches, and a friendship at its center that feels genuine because it largely is.

It streams on Hulu the day after each ABC broadcast. There is very little reason to wait.
