Berserk Ending Explained: What Happens After The Eclipse?

The Eclipse is the most infamous event in anime history. In a single episode, every member of the Band of the Hawk is slaughtered by demons, Griffith ascends to become the fifth member of the God Hand, and Casca is violated in front of Guts as he is held down and forced to watch. It is devastating in a way few stories across any medium have ever attempted.
But the Eclipse is not the ending. It is the midpoint. What happens after is the story r/Berserk has been analysing for decades. Here is everything that follows, and the most discussed theories about where it all leads.
The Immediate Aftermath
Guts survives the Eclipse because the Skull Knight intervenes at the last moment, pulling both Guts and Casca into the interstice between the physical and astral worlds. Guts loses his left arm and his right eye. Casca's mind is shattered. The baby she was carrying, which was corrupted by Griffith's demon seed during the Eclipse, becomes a creature caught between worlds.
The Conviction Arc follows Guts as he becomes the Black Swordsman. He hunts apostles with a cannon arm, a repeating crossbow, and the Dragon Slayer, a sword too large to be called a sword. His body is breaking down from the Brand of Sacrifice, which attracts demons every night. Casca is catatonic, unable to recognise him, recoiling from his touch. This is the darkest period of Berserk, and the manga lingers in it for a long time.
Casca
Casca's condition after the Eclipse is not a simple plot device. It is the emotional core of the entire post-Eclipse story. Her trauma is so severe that her mind regresses to an infantile state as a protective mechanism. She cannot speak. She cannot care for herself. Guts, who is himself breaking under the weight of hatred and the Brand, must care for her while fighting for their survival every night.
The community on r/Berserk has spent years analysing Casca's recovery arc. In the later chapters, Farnese and Schierke enter Casca's dreamscape to reconstruct her shattered psyche. What they find is a nightmare: a broken doll surrounded by fragments of traumatic memories, guarded by a monstrous dog that represents her fear of intimacy and male violence. The sequence is widely considered one of the most psychologically accurate depictions of trauma recovery in manga.
"Casca's dreamscape is one of the most psychologically accurate depictions of trauma recovery ever put into a manga. Miura did the work." -- r/Berserk community consensus

Griffith's Transformation and Falconia
Griffith, now Femto, is reborn into the physical world during the Incarnation Ceremony at the end of the Conviction Arc. He uses the merging of the astral and physical worlds, triggered by the events at Albion, to manifest in human form. The God Hand member who was abstract evil has become a walking man with a kingdom to build.
Falconia is Griffith's capital city and his answer to the chaos of the merging worlds. It is a utopia where humans and apostles coexist under Griffith's protection. Refugees flock to it. The architecture is blinding white. The streets are clean. The people are happy. And the entire thing is a monument to the most profound betrayal in fiction.
The r/Berserk community has debated Falconia intensely. Is Griffith actually building a better world? Is the peace he offers genuine? The evidence is deliberately contradictory. Falconia is beautiful and functional. The people inside are safer than anyone outside. Griffith has done more for humanity than any human ruler. And he earned the power to do it by sacrificing everyone who loved him.
The Moonlight Boy
Throughout the later arcs, a strange boy appears to Guts and Casca under the full moon. He has dark hair and an ethereal quality. He does not speak. He protects Casca. He seems to recognise Guts. The community figured out his identity long before the manga confirmed it: he is the child of Guts and Casca, corrupted by Griffith's transformation during the Eclipse, existing in two forms.
On nights of the full moon, the child can manifest in his human form and seek out his parents. During the rest of the month, he is bound to Griffith's body, sharing the vessel that Griffith uses to walk the physical world. This shared body is the single most important plot thread for theories about how Berserk will end. Griffith cannot be killed without killing the child. Guts cannot kill the child. Casca cannot lose her son again.
Current Manga Developments and Future Theories
At the time of Kentaro Miura's passing in 2021, Berserk was in the Fantasia Arc. Guts had assembled a new party: Farnese, Serpico, Schierke, Isidro, and the elf Puck. Casca had recovered her memories. Griffith had arrived on the island of Elfhelm, and the implications of that arrival were devastating.
The manga has since continued under the supervision of Miura's close friend Kouji Mori and the assistants at Studio Gaga. The most recent chapters before the latest hiatus showed Griffith taking Casca from Elfhelm, an act that echoed the Eclipse in ways that were hard to read and harder to look away from.
"Five Godhand members must die, but Guts is not strong enough yet and the Skull Knight needs help. Sonia and the Moonlight Boy will play huge roles in the ending." -- r/Berserk, widely discussed ending theory

The Most Popular Ending Theories
Theory 1: Griffith is defeated but not killed. Guts breaks the God Hand but spares Griffith, leaving him crippled as he was before the Eclipse. This theory, widely discussed on r/Berserk, argues that Guts' arc is about rejecting revenge in favour of protecting what he has. Killing Griffith would make him no different from the monster he hunts. Leaving Griffith alive but powerless would be the ultimate reversal of their positions.
Theory 2: The Moonlight Boy is the key. The child sharing Griffith's body creates an impossible situation. Killing Griffith means killing the child. Several prominent r/Berserk theories argue the resolution involves separating them, allowing Griffith to be defeated while the child survives. How this happens is unclear, but the Skull Knight's cryptic warnings about "what you might become" suggest Guts may have to make an impossible choice.
Theory 3: The Idea of Evil must be destroyed. The God Hand serves something older and deeper than themselves. The Idea of Evil, revealed in a chapter Miura later removed from canon, is the collective human desire for meaning in suffering given form. Several r/Berserk theories argue that the only true ending is the destruction of this entity, which would dissolve the God Hand and end the cycle of apostles and sacrifice. This theory is philosophically satisfying but may be too abstract to serve as an ending.
Berserk will end the way it has always been told: with suffering and beauty in equal measure. The only question is which one gets the final panel.
